Chapter Twenty-Three

Hailey…

We’d spent the week doing medical appointments for my face, me meeting with Alej’s attorney, and fucking like rabbits. Honestly, the first two things I could have done without, but that last item on the list was my favorite. The attorney said we definitely had a case against the principal for assault, but that it would likely be handled by the prosecutor’s office. He did say that if the school took action to fire me, then we’d have a case for wrongful termination, too. Honestly, all I wanted was to get back to teaching the kids, back to normal.

Alej had asked if I wanted to come with him and stay at his house for the second week, so I decided to take him up on it. I let Missy know I would be out of the house for the week, and that she and Kelton could hang there or not, either was fine. I packed my bag and we headed to his place. It was weird being in there with him. I mean, I’d only seen it the one time when we first came back, but he had an amazing kitchen, with a fully stocked pantry. He ordered in some fresh groceries, and he was an amazing cook. I took my turn at making some meals, but he did the majority of the cooking.

It was weird not working for those two weeks, but I was definitely ready to head back when my doctor gave me the green light. Of course, it also happened to be right after Alej had to leave for Florida for spring training. We had made love so many times that weekend that I really was sore, and walking funny, but it was definitely worth it.

“Welcome back, Ms. Truitt,” the kids said as I walked into my classroom.

“Aw,” I said. “Did you guys miss me?”

“What happened to your face?” Bo asked.

“Bo,” the substitute chided, but I interrupted.

“It’s okay,” I said. “I was hurt, but I’m going to be fine. It was why I was gone for so long. I had to wait until the doctors said I could come back.”

“How did you get hurt?” Ayanna asked.

“I was pushed down,” I said. “It was scary, but I’m okay now.”

“Okay,” she said, and that was the end of the discussion.

It was truly baffling that kids could ask such intrusive questions, then be placated with the simplest of answers. It was a wonderful thing, and I was glad I didn’t have to go into great detail with them.

The day was spent with everything fun, and no more talk about the slice on my face that was in the healing process. By the time the last of the kids left from the morning session, I was exhausted. The school had kept the substitute on for the week, just to help out. They wanted to make sure I was comfortable before they let her go.

When the afternoon kids showed up, we had the same round of questions, I gave the same answers, and we moved on to the lessons we had for the day.
